Brian
Kellock wins Best CD award at BBC Jazz Awards 2002.
The most
coveted award of the night was presented by fellow Scot and
Star Wars and Local Hero actor Dennis Lawson, and the Brian
Kellock Trio all went on stage to collect the award to applause
from the celebrity studded audience and cheers from the Caber
Music contingent who were present alongside Hugh Masekela,
Clive James, Ken Clarke, Moira Stewart, and Mark Knopfler.
The Trio then played a scintillating tune at the ceremony
(slightly hampered by poor sound quality). A night of partying
followed....The other nominees in this category were Jazz
Jamaica Allstars 'Massive' , and Alan Barnes/Dave Newton 'Manhattan'.
Brian was also nominated in the Best Instrumentalist category,
which was won by John Surman.
Press
Reaction:
"The
Edinburgh based pianist won the best album award for the exuberant
'Live at Henry's'. Nobody deserves such recognition more.
Kellock has been a massive creative presence on the Scottish
jazz scene for years now, recognised and revered by visiting
'star' names as a star himself with the world at his feet."

"The
heartiest of Herald congratulations to jazz pianist extraordinaire
Brian Kellock, who won the album of the year award for his
Caber disc 'Live at Henry's' at the BBC Radio Jazz Awards
at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on Wednesday night.
As
well as being more than overdue recognition for Kellock's
astonishing, but self-effacing, talent, it is a considerable
coup for Caledonian jazz in total. Understandably cock-a-hoop
are Tom Bancroft, maitre de of Caber, Roger Spence head chef
at Assembly Direct, and the Scottish Arts Council 's head
of music, Nod Knowles, who provided funded(sic) for both organisations.
Only one other ingredient is required. Vast sales. So you
know your job. You wont regret it."
The Herald, Arts Page
"brilliant
young regional winner...Scots pianist Brian Kellock(best album)
"

This
award, which was voted for by a panel of 150 jazz critics
and promoters, is a major boost for Caber Music and Scottish
jazz in general and represents the culmination of a lot of
hard work to get Scottish talent recognised by the UK jazz
scene as a whole. We, at Caber Music, would like to congratulate
Brian and the Trio for this fantastic achievement.
